What Is an IBAN?
An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is a standardized system for identifying bank accounts across national borders. It was originally developed by the European Committee for Banking Standards (ECBS) and later adopted as an international standard under ISO 13616.
IBAN Format
Every IBAN consists of:
- Country code -- 2 letters (e.g., SE for Sweden, NO for Norway)
- Check digits -- 2 digits for error detection
- BBAN -- Basic Bank Account Number (varies by country, up to 30 alphanumeric characters)
